Visinet: Collaborative 3D Visualization and VR over ATM Networks

چکیده
over networks has become an important research topic over the past few years, including in the Visinet project. The Visinet participants conducted trials of new CSCW methods based on virtual representation and virtual reality techniques over trans-European ATM networks. Designers, architects, city planners, and engineers worked collaboratively with virtual 3D models from locations in the Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Ireland, Portugal, and Switzerland (see the sidebar “List of Visinet Partners”). The project started in August 1994, but, owing to delays in the availability of the trans-European ATM pilot network, user trials did not begin until January 1995. Trials are still ongoing at the time of this writing, now using the James network. Visinet is part of the TEN-IBC (Trans-European Networks, Integrated Broadband Communications) program, one of the RACE subprograms (the European Commission’s Fourth Framework R&D program). In TEN-IBC, commoninterest groups of users and application developers from different industry sectors explore the potential for using ATM networks to let people located throughout Europe work together on the same design project. Visinet connects partners in the European countries mentioned above via the European ATM network. Using these connections, project members have investigated different scenarios and disseminated the results widely. Objectives The main objectives of the Visinet trial were to

A Collaborative Untethered Virtual Reality Environment for Interactive Social Network Visualization
The increasing prevalence of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies as a platform for gaming and video playback warrants research into how to best apply the current state of the art to challenges in data visualization. Many current VR systems are noncollaborative, while data analysis and visualization is often a multi-person process. Our goal in this paper is to address the technical and user experi...
متن کاملVR Scientific Visualization in the GROTTO
This paper describes the efforts being carried out at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) towards VR Scientific Visualization. We are exploring scientific visualization in an immersive virtual environment: the NRL’s CAVE -like device known as GROTTO (Graphical Room for Observation, Training and Tactical Orientation). We describe the AVS GROTTO viewer, a VR interface to the AVS visualization sys...
متن کاملA peer-to-peer collaborative 3D virtual environment for visualization
A peer-to-peer collaborative visualization system has been built that can support both traditional displays and 3D virtual reality hardware. The software is built around Sun’s Java3D graphics and JXTA peer-to-peer networking APIs, allowing two users to load VRML geometry files and manipulate their contents. Although this software takes advantage of VR hardware, it may be used between any two Ja...
متن کاملControl parameters for the analysis and visualization of FE results into a collaborative engineering environment
Currenlty, FE meshes form the basic representation for the analysis and visualization of 3D FE analysis results. In this case, the triangulations used for visualization purposes are colored in accordance with the values issued from the resolution phase. As FE models get larger (hundreds of thousands and over), their 3D visualization become more and more difficult on high performance graphic wor...
متن کاملPersonal Varrier: Autostereoscopic virtual reality display for distributed scientific visualization
As scientific data sets increase in size, dimensionality, and complexity, new high resolution, interactive, collaborative networked display systems are required to view them in real-time. Increasingly, the principles of virtual reality (VR) are being applied to modern scientific visualization. One of the tenets of VR is stereoscopic (stereo or 3d) display, however the need to wear stereo glasse...
